Greetings fellow knitters, fiber enthusiasts, and others.
This is Prince Entrelac of the Knits of the Circular Needles (sorry Camelot), although most people just call me Brian.
I now find myself thrust into the world of blogging. I will preface this by telling you that I hate journaling, so this could prove to be a real challenge.
I wanted to tell you about the next ridiculous adventure I have decided to embark on.
It all started with a special order needle here at work. We had a customer who apparently is making a tablecloth (I’d love to see it) and needed a special needle to be created for the project. Now this is not something we do on a regular basis, but we were able to contact the manufacturer and have this needle created. When the needle arrived in our office, not one but FIVE of these special needles were delivered.
Not soon after I heard about this 120 inch circular needle in a size US 1, my head started spinning with many a ridiculous idea.
What I really wanted to do was make a pair of socks for the Statue of Liberty….but I wasn’t sure if she has a wool allergy.
Being a fan of the magic loop, I thought that it would be novel to make a week’s worth of socks on a singular needle! Most of my friends looked at me as if I had gone off the deep end, but my boss asked me the same question many others had asked. “Why?”
Well naturally, my first response was “Because I can!”
I have not done that much research, but having done a quick search on Ravelry, I’m not sure this has been done before.
Please let me know….if I’m going to do this, I’d love to break the record.
So I hope you’ll join me as I occasionally share about my journey round the needles as I try to complete the feat of knitting 14 feet with 19320 feet of yarn and 10 feet of needle!
One of the first obstacles to cross was how on earth to do this sensibly. Okay who am I kidding.
I do prefer to knit toe up, so that I can try on my socks as I go along. After all, if I’m going to make a week’s worth of socks, I’d like them to fit. I’m being “sponsored” if you will by my company: skacel collection, Inc (www.skacelknitting.com), so all of the yarns come from our wonderful collection of sock yarns. I’ll tell you more about that later.
How do you keep this all in order you ask? Well……I had a lot of ideas on that too, all of them over engineered. I wanted to get right to knitting, and not have to build a custom bag for the project. So I went to the storage department at the local market and there was my solution! A vinyl shoe tree! You could see all the yarn, and it would roll up when I wasn’t using it. Some day I’ll tell you about my more ornate concepts.
